FF2 > My Thoughts
These are just some of my thoughts on the game^^;; You don't have to agree with me or anything, but this is just me putting in my two cents. Some of these were theories I read on other sites that I agree with and am restating in my own words as much as possible without butchering it-.-; Please no flaming me! >_o
Ritual Similarities
Both the Strangling Ritual and the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual are done with 'strangling'. Hense it is call the "Strangling Ritual" because the rope is around the neck as well, as is in the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual where the sister has the strangle the neck of the other sister.
Pain o_o
The goal of both ceremonies is to inflict maximum pain on the sacrificed. This is evident in the rope ceremony carried out by the cult in Fatal Frame by severing the limbs while the person is still alive and conscious o.o; The peculiarity with the twin shrine maiden ceremony is the fact that most of the pain felt is emotional, except in the case of the Kusabi. Whatever is the case I believe that the ceremony can be carried out in any number of ways, so long as there is a lot of pain, usually resulting in death, and then proof to the Hellgate that said pain has taken place, such as the Bloody ropes or a dead body. The masters of both ceremonies carried out whatever seemed to work with whatever they had remaining such as the situation of Kirie being attached to the world and the situation of having just one twin.
Mirrors
It is worth mentioning the holy mirrors in this case. The one mirror we see enshrined at the temple on the hill may in fact be one of the "False Mirrors" we heard of in the first game, which could explain its failure to keep the village safe from the ravages of the "gate to hell".
